Welcoming words by the International Association for Assyriology

By Piotr Michalowski, IAA President

The IAA is a young organization, but thanks to the work of dedicated organizers and members it is becoming stronger every year. Recent Rencontres have been a great success, with wonderful organization by local committees and ever increasing participation by new generations of scholars and students so that even in these hard times it seems that the future of our discipline looks bright indeed. We have implemented a number of new initiatives, including prizes and awards, and now we are bringing you a new way to keep in touch with various undertakings by the broader Assyriological community: the Newsletter.

The first edition already contains many interesting overviews and links to such useful projects as the ongoing bibliography of our discipline, but the Newsletter is designed as a forum for information from our members and therefore we urge you all to contribute. As the President of IAA I welcome all to these pages, but I also want to express my gratitude to those who have worked so hard to bring this about: Ms. Karin Beumer and our technical consultant.

Sincerely,

Piotr Michalowski

During the Rencontre in Leiden in July of last year the IAA Board submitted a proposal to the members to start a Newsletter. The membership endorsed this proposal and some money was made available to get the Newsletter off the ground. Over the past months our new administrator Karin Beumer and our technical consultant have worked hard to prepare the first edition of our Newsletter. As you will see, it contains much information, a number of interviews with members that tell about their department and much more.

Naturally we are looking forward to your reactions to this Newsletter and I hope that you will find the time to look through it and to tell us how you like it. Since this is only a first step we are eager to learn how we can make this Newsletter a central source of information and a platform where our members can meet in a digital environment.

Yours sincerely,

Wilfred van Soldt
