Besides RAI information, this issue will of course also feature our recurring themes: For “In The Spotlight”, this time professor Cornelius and Jonathan Westhead will give us information about Assyriology at Stellenbosch University in South Africa!
“In The Field” has gone off its usual archaeological track. This time, we give you in the field-information from Lidewij van de Peut about her PhD program Topoi in Berlin. The “IAA-Initiatives”-section is all about the Rencontre. Interviews have been conducted with the De Gruijter – and IAA Prize winners and new initiatives are announced. And as always, the “Recent Publications” page has been updated.

IAA-Initiatives: RAI 2013
From July 15th to July 19th, the 59th Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale was held in the beautiful city of Ghent, in Belgium. The theme of this RAI was ‘Law and (Dis)order in the Ancient Near East’, but on Sunday no one could tell, for the registration went as smooth as possible. With the sun shining on Assyriologists gathering from all over the world, it promised to be a fantastic week!
Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale 2012-2013
Ten years after the previous RAI in Leiden, the Rencontre 2012 turned out to be a successful revisit. Under the theme “Private and State in the Ancient Near East” we attended great lectures, met with old friends and enjoyed a warm ambiance. The only spoiler was the weather. It did rain for for most of the week: Not unknown for the Netherlands but definitely overstaying its welcome. Still, we hope everyone enjoyed their visit!
On behalf of the organizing committee in Leiden: Thank you all for coming and participating!
