Happy New Year!

A new year has started and here is a brand new issue of Mār Šiprim with which to celebrate. Unfortunately, our recurring item ‘In the Spotlight’ will not be featured in this issue, due to some unforeseen circumstances, but we expect to restore this segment in our second issue. For our ‘In the Field’ theme we have a very interesting article about the Satu Qala project by Dr. C. Pappi. You will also read about up-to-date IAA initiatives and announcements, so make sure you read it all.

We remind you that we welcome any input and ideas, and need all of the help we can get, so we hope everyone will again participate in making this year’s newsletters of interest, as you did in 2013.

Enjoy this first issue of Mār Šiprim for 2014!

In The Field: The Satu Qala Project

By: Cinzia Pappi

Since 2010, a combined team from the University of Leiden, the University of Leipzig, and the Salahaddin University of Erbil has been conducting excavations at Satu Qala, the ancient city of Idu (van Soldt 2008). The fieldwork continued in 2013 in cooperation with the University of Pennsylvania with a study season to examine all the excavated materials now stored in the archaeological museums of Erbil and Koya. The work was, of course, made possible through the generous support of the General Directorate of Antiquities of the Kurdish Regional Government, the Directorate of Antiquities of Erbil and of Koya, and the Erbil Civilization Museum. The project was supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research NWO and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. Continue reading In The Field: The Satu Qala Project

Maureen Kovacs Subsidies for Cuneiform Studies

2014 marks the debut of the Maureen Kovacs Fund, arising from a generous donation by Dr. Maureen Kovacs. It will offer funds for Assyriologists doing post-doctoral research no later than five years after being awarded their doctorate. It will subsidize the costs of a project related to their research up to 1000 Euros, whether for travel expenses, acquisition of research material, or some other necessity approved by the applicant’s supervisor. Any IAA member who is eligible may apply, and the decision about the proposal will be made by a committee of three persons appointed by the Board of the IAA. IAA Website and Other Technical Information

As announced at the General Meeting of the last Rencontre, the IAA is working very hard to update their website. Though the old website was fine in the past, it has now become outdated. Also, the URL was difficult to remember and therefore the website was hard to find. We shall try to make the new website as modern and efficient as possible, using the same layout we currently use for the Mār Šiprim site. Continue reading IAA Website and Other Technical Information
